Lens replacement for refractive errors is very similar to cataract surgery. The key difference is that the replacement lenses are clear, not cloudy.

Lens replacement surgery is an outpatient procedure that takes about 20 to 30 minutes per eye. Your eyes will be numbed and you can take medication to relax you.

Step 1 – Getting to the lens

Firstly, we create a tiny, self-sealing incision in the front of the eye, where the white of the eye meets the cornea.

Step 2 – Capsulotomy

Then, we create a circular opening in the membrane that covers the natural lens (called the lens capsule).

Step 3 – Phacoemulsification

Next, we break the lens into small pieces and remove the pieces from the eye. This is referred to as lens extraction.

Step 4 – Implanting the Intraocular Lens (IOL)

Finally, the lens implant is replaced with an artificial lens into the lens capsule. We pre-select the lens based on your visual needs and goals.

Everyone recovers differently, but you can expect to resume all of your everyday activities within a week of surgery.
